The KOGI, Lost Tribe with a Message of Peace

Around 25 years ago I saw an amazing video called from the “Heart of the World.” It was about a unique Indigenous community that lived in Northern Colombia who say they are keeping the world in balance. I was so impressed because they are still living with the same spiritual values and traditions of their ancestors, but the ecological warning the Kogi’s shared touched a nerve.
The nerve was I needed to more about this special Tribe…One day I would be with them on their land and learn the secrets of the Mamos.

I was born in Bogota, Colombia in 1959 and came to the US in 1960, so I never had a chance to really understand my roots and my Colombian heritage. When I saw how the Kogi lived I was determined to find a way to meet them. The only problem was they don’t like tourists and getting into their land is very difficult, not to mention that today there is para-military
control, FRAC guerrillas, corrupt officials and not sure who to trust. We forget Colombia has been at war for more than 45 yrs and has riches beyond description. The senseless killings of Elders and destruction of the Sierra is a sad state of affairs.

In May 1995 I moved to Brazil to work for Ford Motor Company to promote an internal communications campaign called Ford 2000 in Latin America. Then I spent 1 year at the World Headquarters in Detroit working in the International Public Affairs covering Asia, India and Latin America. Life was good but deep down I had a need to understand my roots.

In April of 1997, I went to Colombia on a business trip and met some people who had just returned from the Sierra Nevada where the Kogi live. I was having major synchronicities about the Kogi and my heart kept feeling I needed to find a way to communicate with them.

In June of 1997 a lifelong dream came true for me. I had taken a leave of absence from my job at Ford or in other
words…quit…and decided to go to a special event called the 2nd International Gathering of Priest and Elders of the
Americas in the Amazon region of Colombia. Mayan Elder Don Alejandro was the key Elder for this event that started in Guatemala in 1996. I knew I had to be there.

When I arrived I started helping with the logistics of the conference. We were expecting about 300 elders and bridge people from more than 13 countries and being back in Colombia was a blessing.

That event changed my life and I made a promise to my Kogi brothers that one day I would return and help them out.

I have been back to the sacred mountain countless times and each time the situation gets more intense.

A few weeks ago I had a chance to go to the Sierra and feel the energy of the Sacred Mountain. Deep profound insight came to me in dreams and can feel the Prophecy in Motion.

From the inception of our film we have had a Humanitarian aspect. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the natives living there are suffering and not many people understand the importance of the spiritual work the Mamos are doing.

The Humanitarian Campaign will have 3 key objectives:
* Raise awareness of the critical situation the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is in and the humanitarian crisis of the 4 main Tribes.

The Kogi and all the tribes in the Sierra are asking for help and the time has come to hear the call.

A little history …..

More than 500 years ago the Kogi fled high into a sacred mountain in Northern Colombia called the Sierra Nevada de
Santa Marta, the Spanish had arrived and the message was not good. The Elders believe the Sierra Nevada to be the “Mother” and the “Heart of the World.” The Sierra Nevada, in the shape of a pyramid is where the Andes chain begins or ends, depending on your perspective. If you look at the Andes, the Sierra is the crown chakra or top most part of South America.
It is like a spinal column and the sacred mountain is the 3rd eye. The Kogi are unique among the world’s Indigenous cultures because they were never conquered by the Spaniards. They are said to have memory of the beginning of time and remember the rampage the conquistadors brought to their region in 1498.

In 1988 the Kogi allowed a BBC journalist Alain Ereira to film a documentary about their culture. This was a historic event.

Many years have come and gone and the situation in the Sierra has gotten worse. Ecological destruction, mega dam projects, cocaine wars and Monsanto and you can imagine how these sacred people feel.

In June of 1997 after the Indigenous conference I was invited to visit the Kogi via Guatapuri on the Western side of the Sierra. This created a bond of friendship and trust.

For more than 13 years I have been learning the complexities of the Sierra and the differences in between the various tribes and NGOs. Yes it is a bit more complicated that you can imagine and that will be another article.

Prophecy, Last Message www.propehcylastmessage.com has been a labor of love. I have never done a film before and it has been a journey. Our film is not about any one Tribe but more about the Rainbow Bridge People, you and me… who unite these 2 Sacred Birds, the Condor and the Eagle to fulfill a Prophecy written in Stone many moons ago.

We are the “Younger Brother” who are destroying the Earth and causing an ecological imbalance. Now it is our turn to affect future generations with a story whose time has come. A Unique Film that will give you an Experience.

So who are these Kogi anyway? What is so special about them? Why would I spend so much time trying to do a crazy film about them?

The Kogi are the direct descendants of the Tayrona civilization. The Tayrona culture flourished in Northern Colombia around 1,000 AD. They left behind stunning gold artwork, stone and pottery artifacts and an amazing network of brick roads covering the Sierra Nevada, not to mention a few lost cities. Kogi society has changed little in the past five centuries.

They survived as a culture because the Kogi focus all their energy on the life of the Aluna, Thought and Potential, a mind as opposed to the life of a body or an individual. Fundamental to that survival is the maintenance of physical separation from their world and our own. They are very protective of their sacred space and the dense jungle is not kind to tourists.

Where do they live?
The Kogi live in the higher regions of the Sierra Nevada. Many self-sustaining communities are on the Western part of the Mountain accessible through Valledupar, which is located in the State of Cesar. The Sierra Nevada is the highest coastal mountain in the world only 26 miles from the beach. It is located near the Equator, which means it has no seasons. Day and night are of equal length all year round. It has every eco-system in its 17,000 km2 area.
The highest peak is the Pico Simon Bolivar at 5,775 mtrs. So in this mountain area all the eco-systems of earth
are present creating a mini earth. From the sea the mountain goes straight to snow capped peaks.

Why are they unique?
The Kogi represent the most complete surviving civilization of pre-Columbian America. They are not hunter-gatherers
or a wondering tribe. They are a nation whose fields have been continuously cultivated for more than a thousand years.

The Kogi believe they are the “Elder Brothers,” the Guardians of life on Earth. Through their mind power and meditation they keep the world in balance. They live in “Aluna,” an inner world of thought and potential. They are now concerned because their Mountain is dying.

Everything about their history and religion is passed down through oral instructions and their lives are run by the
spiritual leaders or Shamans named “Mamas.” The Kogi Mamas are chosen from birth and spend the first nine years of childhood in a cave in total darkness learning the ancient secrets of the spiritual world or Aluna. They are the priests and judges who control Kogi society. All major decisions and shamanic work is done by Divination. All is the world of Aluna, so the Mamas see a reflection of the physical world first in the spiritual world. If Aluna is the Mother, then the Kogi listen to the Mother by divining. This lost technique of divination is what keeps the Kogi world in balance and order.

The Mamas are worried that the “Younger Brother” has not heeded the first warning. If the Sierra Nevada or the Mother dies, the world will also die.

Of unique importance is that the Kogi are a peaceful tribe that have never killed one of their own and rarely intermarry.
They never grow gray hair and have no facial hair. They can spend 9 days awake without sleep during their ceremonial rites.
They are now beginning to learn Spanish because they realize the importance of communicating with the outside world.
They also need to understand the Colombian Government’s laws regarding the Sierra Nevada, which was named a Historical Heritage by UNESCO and a National Park by the Colombian Government.

So as you can see and read we are on a mission. I have learned many lessons along the way of producing this film and humanitarian campaign. But the most important is not to give up…Believe me this thought has crossed my mind several times and all it takes is a trip to this sacred land and you will understand.

When I was there a few weeks ago, I could feel the power of pure clean rivers, a roaring of thunder and rain like never before. But it is the water that is what this region is all about. Water is the Gold of the Future and Present, a gift of our Mother and we wonder if we are really protecting it. Without this precious resource, few of us would be alive.

The Kogi have a lot to teach us. Are we ready to listen?

For many years I have heard of the Hopi people and their mysterious ways. They are known as the peaceful tribe and have never waged war on their fellow natives.
One day I knew I would meet them and start a journey that would last a life-time.

My first trip to Hopi land was in 1995. I went to Sedona and met Sakina Blue Star, an amazing women who had a close relationship with the Hopis. I asked her if she could take me there and she agreed.
We traveled the barren road to the 3 sacred mesas where the Hopi live. I was beginning to learn the Red Road and knew this trip was going to be a blessing.

Sakina took me to her friend Rowina Jackson, a Hopi women who created Shakina Dolls. We had an amazing talk about the ways of their people and I learned many secrets in this trip. I ended up buying one of her Shakina Dolls that I still have on my alter today. But most important I was gifted a small Eagle chest Feather. It was an honor and sacred gift I would cherish and understand much later in life.

On my return back to Miami I started doing research about the Hopi and knew in my heart they had a gift for Prophecy and one day their warnings to the world would come true.

Then in 1996 I went to Washington, DC for the One Prayer Gathering (www.oneprayer.org ) This was a gathering of Elders and a sacred fire that lasted 3 days. The event was powerful and seeing teepees surrounding the Huge Obalisk on the Mall was a vision to keep. To my surprise a Hopi Elder named Thomas Banyacya was one of the key note speakers. He was a quiet humble man…few words spoken but when he spoke you could feel the ancestors with him.

I took many photos of him as you can see on this web. He spoke of the Prophecies and was one of the three main Hopi Elders who had gone to the UN in 1992 to give a message of peace. What was also incredible was he had the Hopi Sacred Map. It was old and had the some petroglyths from the Sacred Hopi Rock near the Mesas. We had a private meeting with him at a friend of mine house named Barbara Carpenter. He explained the map and how one day the world could go into war and confusion or start a new world of peace and harmony. It all depended on us!

As I looked at this map, my mind went back to the Sacred Rock where one year earlier I was standing there in awe looking at the mystery of Prophecy.

Thomas was also staying at Barbara’s house and he seemed tired, as if the weight of the world was on his shoulders. Barbara knew I was a healer and asked, “Why don’t you do a healing on him.” I said it would be an honor. To my surprise when I started to do the healing on Thomas, his animal spirit guides appeared. What a shock to see the wolf, eagle and bear…watching me.

As I did the healing I found myself in a trance. I started to chant in an Indian voice and could not control what I was singing. It was a very powerful and emotional experience and something I would never forget.

I will never forget my dear brother Thomas who passed to the spirit world in 1999.

He had a powerful message to share, a warning for the people.
He gave his life to his people…blessed are those who had a chance to meet him.

We also have a message to share. In time all will be revealed. Join us on this magical adventure. I promise your life will never be the same.

The time has come to respect our differences, to respect the realities of other cultures and to respect the sanctity of all life, over and above the development processes that are threatening the very future of Creation.

Lying back in his hammock, inside the great ceremonial temple of Seiyua, Mama Valencio gently taps his poporo with the stick he uses for extracting the lime from burnt sea shells to add to the coca leaves he quietly chews. Mama Valencio is the eldest Mama, the main spiritual leader of the Kogi, one of the tribes that are descendants of the Tayrona of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the sacred mountain of Colombia.

With a deep sadness, he asks over and again about the reasons for this latest cultural aggression by the younger brother in those of us from the developed world. This time one of the sacred sites, Jukulwa, is being destroyed; a site that from time immemorial has served as a reference and memory for keeping the Law of Origin, and a place for carrying out traditional practices. He knows that the permit issued by the Ministry for Environment, Housing and Territorial Development, for the construction of a coal port on the sacred site, was given without any prior consultation with the Indigenous community in violating one of their fundamental rights within the Colombian Constitution.

He also knows that his forefathers handed him the responsibility for keeping the balance and order of the Universe as enacted by the Law of Origin, also known as the Law of the Mother. This law is transmitted orally from generation to generation, and its points of reference and places of application are the sacred sites within and around the ancestral territory.

According to the Indigenous people of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, at the beginning of time the world was just spirit. It was from here that order and everything that exists in the material world today was established: the plants, animals, water, mountains, stones, and the people. All these things were first created spiritually, and they share the same essence from the great spiritual Mother.

Then the material universe was created, and darkness turned to light, and the laws were enacted that regulate the function of each element of Nature. Each one of the spiritual beings was given a mandate and was handed a territory, a sacred site. Hence every element of Nature has a spiritual guardian, a Father and a Mother, an order, a site, and a purpose that must be fulfilled from that mandate that was given by the spiritual Mother. This is the history of the Law of Origin, which determines behaviour and governance, as well as the social, political and economic order of the Kogi.

To the Kogi, the Sierra Nevada, aside from being the Heart of the World, is also the centre of their Universe. They regard it as their duty to guarantee that any human intervention is carried out in harmony with Nature.

The Kogi’s ancestral territory is formed and bounded by many sacred sites. These are places that serve as a source of knowledge. These are places from where assurance is given for everything that is going to happen, from where life is taken care of, be it animal, plant, water, rain, air, earth; where offerings are made and permission is asked to ensure that human activity or intervention is in accordance with the Law of Origin. These are places where sickness is cured, where the natural life cycles of the crops, animals and humans are celebrated, and where conflicts are resolved. Each sacred site has a jurisdiction, and the norms that are prescribed from there cannot be changed; they are permanent.

The sacred sites are all interconnected and form an energetic network. The snow-capped peaks connect with the sacred lakes, which lead to the streams and rivers, which in turn connect with the sea, the place of origin. This system of interconnections is also present in the social organization, and so humans and Nature go always hand in hand. It is an indivisible system that gives sense to life, to Nature, to the territory and the culture. It is the force that gives life to all the elements of the Sierra Nevada.

The construction of a port for exporting coal now threatens Jukulwa. This is the spiritual centre where the four tribes of the Sierra Nevada unite with one thought and body to care for the health of the Indigenous world, the animals and plants.

More than just an insult against the Indigenous people of the Sierra Nevada and their traditional cultures, it is an aggression against humanity.

According to the dreams and the stars in the firmament, everything indicates that the time has come for us to assume, collectively and in solidarity, our responsibilities; to guarantee the ancestral territory of the Sierra Nevada and its sacred spaces, the Heart of the World. The time has come to respect our differences; to respect the realities lived by different cultures in other regions of the planet, and to respect life, over and above the development processes that are threatening the very future of Creation.

Juan Mayr Maldonado has spent his life working to protect the bio-cultural diversity of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Mamos message to the world…

Declaración al mundo

1. Para nosotros existe una sola ley -sagrada, inmutable, preexistente, primitiva y sobreviviente a todos y a todo-. Podría el mundo existir o dejar de existir, sin que esto alterara en lo más mínimo la esencia de dicha ley, la cual constituye el pensamiento universal de lo no manifiesto, único origen de la vida. Esta ley de origen halla expresión en el universo. Se da entonces una hermosa asociación entre ley y pensamiento, que, a compás con el entorno, se transforma en ley natural. Esta ley natural da origen a la creación de la materia y a su evolución, equilibrio, preservación y armonía. Ellos constituyen los objetivos fundamentales del mamo, su razón de ser. El hecho es, no obstante, que el hermanito menor viola el orden inmutable de esta ley y lleva a la Madre Tierra (Séineken) y a todos los seres vertiginosos al despeñadero.

Esta es la razón por la cual exigimos imperativamente a la humanidad un cambio en su comportamiento general, en su conducta hacia nosotros y en el trato que le da a la Madre Tierra, nuestra madre real -madre de todas las madres e hija de la gran madre sabiduría-. Todos estamos en deuda con ella. ¿Quién paga a la madre el aire que respiramos, el agua que fluye, la luz del sol? La madre universal reclama del hermano menor estos pagos. Solamente a través de los Mamos y mediante los pagamentos se hace posible la cancelación de estas deudas.

2. Dichas leyes están expresadas como atributos sagrados en un orden circular -la línea negra -triangular-forma del macizo montañoso- visible e invisible. Son conocidos como lugares de pagamentos y están ubicados en trescientos setenta mil puntos de la vida de la Sierra Nevada. Estas leyes se fundamentan en el respeto, interior (Sierra Nevada y sus cuatro etnias) y exterior (bunachis y resto del planeta). Al llevarse a cabo los pagamentos, se genera una serie de factores positivos, tales como lluvias buenas, buenos veranos, sol y aires buenos.

3. Esta armonía se manifiesta en la vida de trescientas setenta mil especies de biodiversidad (fauna y flora). De la supervivencia de cada una de las especies, se sostiene y se garantiza la vida del hombre y la de su en torno.

4. Nosotros tenemos por la ley el cuidado de esa vida, desde lo que llamamos Línea Negra, la cual está escrita en la ley del universo, y constituye a la vez un elemento sagrado y una herramienta que necesitamos que nos sean devueltos para cumplir nuestra misión sagrada.

5. Reclamamos nuestro territorio y nuestra línea divisoria como expresión y herencia legítima de nuestros ancestros, de ello dependen nuestra salud física y nuestro bienestar mental y espiritual, así como el equilibrio total de nuestro planeta y de la humanidad entera.

6. La Sierra Nevada es el corazón del mundo, fuente vital y primaria de toda energía, origen de la vida y del equilibrio espiritual de Séineken (la madre tierra). Para nosotros todo lo que existe tiene un espíritu que es sagrado y que debe ser respetado. Por eso, todo es sagrado y nuestro hermano: el aire, el fuego, los árboles, los insectos, las piedras, los cerros… vivimos en continuo diálogo con ellos a través de nuestros poderes, de nuestros conocimientos y de nuestra actividad espiritual

7. La Sierra Nevada es casa sagrada, hogar sagrado y lugar de paz. Todo lo que vaya en contra del establecido orden de cosas, profana nuestra existencia, nuestras costumbres y nuestra profunda identidad con el mandato de nuestra ley de origen. Nosotros somos parte de la Madre Tierra y ella parte de nosotros: todo lo que ocurre a ella nos ocurre a nosotros, y lo que le ocurre a nosotros, le ocurre a ella.

8. Todo daño que se le ocasione a la Sierra Nevada, a sus lugares, a sus puntos de pagamento, a sus tradiciones, a sus orígenes, a sus Mamos, a sus cuatro etnias, inevitablemente tendrá repercusiones negativas en el planeta y en el universo.

Se pronostica que vendrán años de duros veranos, granizadas, lluvias ácidas y toda clase de cataclismos y desastres naturales.

9. No entendemos cómo el hermano menor es capaz de traficar con los elementos y órganos de su propia madre. Como hijos del agua, de la tierra, del viento y del fuego sabemos desde tiempos inmemorables que de estos elementos proviene la fuerza de nuestro espíritu.

El agua es como nuestro espíritu, pues nunca cambia su esencia y aunque adopte múltiples formas: nube, lagunas y ríos, rocío en los árboles, humedad en el ambiente. En el ámbito de sus múltiples manifestaciones, la esencia de nuestro espíritu permanece inalterable.

Nuestra ley es la ley del agua, es la ley del sol, la ley del rayo. No admite reformas, no conoce decretos, no acepta constituciones ni políticas, porque nuestra ley que rige la vida permanece en el tiempo. Para que la armonía vuelva a nuestras vidas, es necesario que la ley creada por los hombres respete y acate la ley de origen, la ley natural, la ley de la vida, la suprema ley de los Mamos.

10. Invitamos a todos nuestros hermanos menores a unirse a nosotros en la sagrada misión de ser guardianes de la vida, en una red espiritual para la defensa de nuestro patrimonio único: la Madre Tierra.

11. Ratificamos nuestro compromiso con Séineken, con la paz de nuestro país y del mundo, y hacemos un llamado desde la Sierra Nevada (norte de Colombia) a la solidaridad, a la unidad, a la paz y a la espiritualidad para todas las naciones y gentes. Nuestro indeclinable propósito es que toda Colombia lidere un movimiento en defensa de la Madre Tierra y de la vida en todas sus manifestaciones.

Ratificamos nuestro deseo de vivir, de seguir luchando por la vida y de seguir defendiendo la biodiversidad del planeta. Se trata de nuestro deber ancestral; si no cumplimos con él, habrá hombres, mas no sobrevivientes en el pleno sentido de la palabra.

12. Finalmente, dejamos constancia formal de que si el hermano menor hace caso de nuestro llamamiento y de nuestras recomendaciones, nos comprometemos a activar todos los campos de energía, con el fin de evitar mayores daños al planeta, la destrucción de muchas vidas y los terribles desastres económicos que se ciernen en el horizonte. Olvidemos el que no se haya hecho caso en el pasado, y contemplemos confianza sobre el futuro.
